Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono has highlighted the importance of discussing the future of adaptive UN peacekeeping missions to face rapidly evolving situations on the ground.

Indonesia, which has been contributing to UN missions since 1957, currently ranks as the fifth-largest troop-sending country for the UN Peacekeeping Mission, with 2,753 troops spread across eight missions, he informed.

"A commitment that I believe will continue in the years to come, in line with our Constitution and the government's strategic vision," he said during the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting at the TNI Peacekeeping Mission Center, Sentul, on Tuesday.

He further emphasized the importance of respecting the basic principles of the UN Peacekeeping Mission. To that end, he stressed the need to identify the necessary capabilities.

He said that peacekeeping forces require adequate resources and support, including well-trained personnel, the latest technology, and financial resources.

"To all the sons and daughters of the nation who answered the call to serve in the UN peacekeeping mission, you are real proof of Indonesia's commitment to actively maintaining international peace, order, and stability, as mandated by our Constitution," he remarked.

In addition to troop contributions, he said, Indonesia has been actively participating in discussions related to the UN Peacekeeping Mission in multilateral forums.

It has also taken part in the formulation of the Action for Peacekeeping (A4P), which is currently the main document for advancing peacekeeping missions and increasing the effectiveness of mandate implementation, he added.

The preparatory meeting of "The Future of UN Peacekeeping" will last for two days and include five panel discussion sessions on the challenges and opportunities faced by UN peacekeepers amidst the increasingly complex international security challenges.

The meeting also aims to formulate inputs to be submitted at the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Berlin, Germany, on May 13–14, 2025.
