This was conveyed by Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/head of the Investment Coordinating Board, Rosan Roeslani, after a limited meeting with the President at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Thursday.
"We are already committed to Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, in fact, the President's wish can be achieved even sooner," the minister said.
He expounded that Indonesia currently has great potential in the electric vehicle supply chain, particularly due to its nickel resources and existing battery recycling facilities.
According to Roeslani, Indonesia's electric car production is currently around 1.2 million units per year and is continuing to grow. By 2030, it is expected to reach 2.5 million units.
However, he said he believes that the development of domestic electric vehicle manufacturing still needs to be strengthened.
He noted that several foreign electric car manufacturers, such as Hyundai, BYD, and Wuling, have invested in Indonesia; however, they are operating under their respective brands.
The government wants Indonesia to play a bigger role in the industry, including by developing local vehicles such as Maung, which has the potential to be developed further, Roeslani added.
"We will work on it further. Maung already exists, and we will look into its future development. My focus is more on the investment side, how is the development, what the calculations will be," he informed.
