Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai stated that the development of Kampung Redam demonstrates the government's commitment to fostering peace and justice, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
"In Indonesia, numerous regions or villages have been affected by social conflicts in various forms, including those that have been resolved and those that may recur, ranging from small to large scale," he explained in a statement issued by the ministry on Wednesday.
Pigai elaborated that Kampung Redam’s development would begin with identifying regions significantly impacted by large-scale conflicts, such as Ambon, Aceh, Lampung, and Poso, as well as areas in Kalimantan and Papua.
"We will intervene in social conflicts between gangs at the village level to create a model village that prioritizes reconciliation and promotes a spirit of peace," he remarked.
Kampung Redam will be led by local communities representing social groups involved in conflicts. It will feature an information system for monitoring conditions and will incorporate aspects of human rights values.
A monument dedicated to reconciliation and peace will also be erected to serve as a reminder to the community to prioritize peace and social justice and prevent the recurrence of past conflicts.
Kampung Redam will be integrated into a rehabilitation program, including restitution and compensation.
"With the establishment of Kampung Redam, we aim to strengthen social integration in Indonesia, maintain brotherhood and unity, and ultimately make our nation stronger," Pigai affirmed.
