Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Nezar Patria highlighted that Indonesia is the first Southeast Asian country to embrace the AI ecosystem assessment tool devised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
"Several nations, including those in ASEAN, asked Indonesia to tell about its experience in completing the RAM for AI by UNESCO," he remarked at his office in Central Jakarta on Monday.
Patria highlighted that during a ministerial-level meeting at the summit, Indonesia received praise for the assessment of its readiness for the use of AI and its commitment to advancing this cutting-edge technology.
"Note that our participation in the Readiness Assessment Methodology for AI has garnered remarkable appreciation," he affirmed.
Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid represented Indonesia at the AI Action Summit on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, who was invited by French President Emmanuel Macron.
UNESCO initiated its assessment of Indonesia's AI landscape in May 2024 and announced its findings in October of the same year.
Upon the assessment, the UN body provided several recommendations to Indonesia to advance its national AI ecosystem, including establishing a national agency dedicated to governing this digital technology and forging cross-sector coordination.
Indonesia was also advised to ensure equal access for its people to AI-related educational services and infrastructure. This measure is considered vital for the country to adopt AI effectively.
Furthermore, the findings suggested that the Indonesian government engage researchers and startup companies from beyond Java Island in addressing matters concerning AI to pursue inclusive use of this technology.
