"The maritime threat that we see today is illegal activities at sea such as smuggling, be it the smuggling of drugs, humans, electronic goods, alcoholic beverages, and illegal migrants," he told the media here on Monday.
He informed that the international forum will also discuss commitments and joint steps to tackle illegal fishing and activities that can pose a threat to the maritime environment, such as pollution due to waste disposal in the sea.
The IMSS, which was opened by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, could also help strengthen and expand cooperation between countries to support humanitarian assistance due to natural disasters.
"The threat of natural disasters, such as tsunamis and extreme weather, often results in ship accidents. This is a concern so we can work together to help every country, every ship that experiences an emergency," he said.
Ali further said he believes that the theme of stability and peace raised at the IMSS could also help prevent conflicts in the maritime region at large.
"We will make a joint commitment with various countries to work together in tackling illegal activities on the borders without causing an impact on economic activities and humanitarian problems in the maritime environment," he added.
He said that through the forum, bilateral and multilateral cooperation can be built to address maritime issues.
Earlier, he informed that through IMSS, the navies of each participating country will align, unite, and share thoughts and perspectives to build mutual understanding on maritime issues.
