Jakarta (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová agreed to bolster defense cooperation between Indonesia and the Czech Republic during a meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Head of the information bureau of the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Frega Ferdinand Wenas Inkiriwang, informed that the cooperation will involve renewing the defense cooperation agreement (DCA).

"We have an expiring DCA in 2023. Minister Černochová's visit also includes discussion on the existing DCA renewal," he said.

According to Inkiriwang, the Czech Republic is one of the countries that produces quality main weapons systems with economical and competitive prices.

During the meeting, the two countries also discussed new cooperation opportunities, in addition to the cooperation established since 2006 in the form of procurement of defense equipment, military equipment, and defense technology transfer, he said.

"During the discussion, the possibility of cooperation in education was also discussed, followed by military-to-military training," he added.

The meeting also explored defense cooperation through the Defense University.

"The Czech Republic has a Defense University. This is also an opportunity in the context of defense cooperation in the university sector. Regarding military and defense development, it is not only related to defense equipment but also human resources," Inkiriwang informed.

Currently, negotiations between the two countries are underway with the involvement of the Foreign Affairs Ministry since they concern the relationship between the countries, he said.

"This also requires a contribution at a higher level, in this case, (from) President Prabowo Subianto. Therefore, the period of DCA discussion cannot be determined. It can take five months or even a year to be completed," he added.

He expressed the hope that Indonesia and the Czech Republic will reach an agreement to extend the DCA soon. This is especially since the two countries share a common understanding of the need for defense cooperation.

"The relationship between Indonesia and Czech has been built for a long time," he added.
