The current scheme allocates Rp1.1 billion (nearly US$110,500) in village funds to each village annually.
"However, we might raise this amount to between Rp6 billion and Rp8 billion per village following the implementation of the free meals program," Luhut stated on Thursday.
He indicated that the projected increase in fund allocation could lead to significant improvements in the economic conditions of rural areas and their residents.
"You can imagine how this anticipated increase will stimulate economic growth and enhance economic activities in villages," he said.
Luhut also emphasized that the meals program serves as a tool for the government to promote regional equality.
"Many people tend to overlook the purpose of this program, which, in essence, aims to foster equality by reaching beneficiaries in 74,000 villages," he said.
On February 4, Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions (PDT) Yandri Susanto vowed to take legal action against village heads found misusing village funds.
"We do not take such matters lightly," he said.
Susanto added that his ministry will coordinate with law enforcement agencies to hold violators accountable.
He stressed that firm measures are necessary to deter village leaders from misappropriating funds and to ensure compliance with the central government's directives.
