Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Defense is seeking to strengthen cooperation between the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Russian Military through several schemes, such as joint training, technology transfer, and soldier exchanges.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei K. Shoigu, discussed the potential cooperation during a bilateral meeting here on Tuesday.

According to the head of the ministry's defense information bureau, TNI Brigadier General Frega Ferdinand Wenas Inkiriwang, the cooperation will benefit Indonesia as the TNI can learn a lot from Russia, which has an advanced technology industry.

The TNI, he added, can also learn about war tactics and strategies from Russia, whose military force is currently active in war.

Joint training activities between Indonesia and Russia are continuing to be developed. The most recent one was the Orruda Joint Training held in the Java Sea in November 2024.

In addition, cooperation in technology is expected to be developed considering many of the main weapons systems belonging to the TNI are made by Russia.

They include the Sukhoi Su-27 and Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets, Mi-35 and Mi-17 helicopters, BMP-3F infantry fighting vehicles, as well as the Kalashnikov AK-101 and AK-102 rifles.

Indonesia, according to Inkiriwang, is also pursuing soldier exchange cooperation with Russia.

Under the exchange program, soldiers can learn more about the defense of each country as well as build connections and networks.

With various cooperation schemes, Indonesia is also hoping to strengthen its military capability, he added.
