He emphasized the importance of being able to produce health equipment needed by the community in emergencies. This capability would enable Indonesia to be better equipped with sufficient supplies in the event of a likely pandemic in the future that may necessitate a lockdown.
"In national aggregates, state spending on the health sector is around Rp640 trillion. With the locally produced blood bag products and hemodialysis machines, this can help state spending and contribute to 3 percent of Indonesia's GDP," he remarked here on Wednesday (February 26).
The minister noted that hemodialysis machines are crucial due to the continued rise in demand for dialysis. Hence, he invited the public to make the most of the free health screening program to prevent chronic diseases that require dialysis.
He also invited the domestic industry to participate in producing medical devices required by the country, especially in offering free health checks and improving the quality of hospitals.
Various single-use health products that need attention, including blood plasma and NaCl, require regulatory support to ensure domestic production can run smoothly.
The minister pointed out that several items, including dialysis reagents, are still being imported.
"Well, we have started (to produce more health products). We used to have only one vaccine factory, but since 2020, there have been three factories,” Budi noted.
He further noted that the imports of medical devices had fallen from 90 percent to around 60-70 percent.
President Director of Oneject Indonesia Jahja Tear Tjahjana stated that his company can annually produce 6 million blood bags and around 1,200-1,500 hemodialysis machines.
Jahja expressed optimism that his side could supply at least 70 percent of the blood bags required by the Indonesian Red Cross.
