Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi emphasized that the participation of local governments is crucial to support the smooth flow of traffic during the 2025 Eid al-Fitr travel period.

"Local governments' participation, especially in areas that become major destinations for homecoming trips, is important to support the smooth flow of traffic during the 2025 Eid period," Purwagandhi stated at the Magelang Retreat: Session for Regional Heads here on Thursday.

The minister explained that his side has mapped out accident-prone points and several locations likely to experience high vehicle congestion during the Eid exodus and return trips in 2025.

He noted that around 25 street markets are scattered along the arterial or urban exodus routes from Jakarta to Central Java.

"These street markets often cause traffic jams in arterial routes from Jakarta to Central Java," he pointed out.

In addition, high traffic density is also likely to occur at several tourist destinations, especially in Bogor and Bandung in West Java.

Purwagandhi also drew attention to the challenges faced by local governments regarding safety in the transportation sector.

He underscored the need to address the high rate of accidents at the national and provincial levels as a shared concern.

Over-dimension and over-loading (ODOL) transportation is another challenge, as it is one of the causes of traffic accidents and road damage.

He deems it important to strengthen coordination with local governments, especially regarding the regulation of freight or logistics vehicles.

"We need to be consistent in carrying out a number of activities, such as regular vehicle inspections, bridge checks, and law enforcement against violators," he stressed.
