"Floods have impacted seven sub-districts, with water levels ranging from 20 to 150 centimeters," said Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bekasi Dodi Supriadi stated in Bekasi on Tuesday.
He identified the affected areas as Cibarusah, Serang Baru, Setu, North Cikarang, Cibitung, North Tambun, and Bojongmangu.
Supriadi explained that the disaster was triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall combined with water flows from Bogor and surrounding areas. The situation was further exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems in several locations, preventing floodwaters from receding quickly.
The official then stated that the floods have led to extensive disruptions, most notably rendering roads impassable, prompting residents to evacuate their homes, and ultimately suspending public activities.
"We are monitoring the affected locations while coordinating with relevant stakeholders to provide assistance to those in need," he stated.
The Bekasi BPBD, in collaboration with soldiers, police officers, and volunteers, initiated rescue operations, focusing on the hardest-hit areas of the North Tambun, Serang Baru, and Cibarusah districts.
"The rescue teams are using inflatable boats to evacuate people from their submerged homes," Supriadi remarked.
He then appealed to Bekasi's residents to remain vigilant, as the district is still expected to experience further medium- to high-intensity rainfall.
"To residents currently staying at home, we would like to urge you to secure your belongings to higher spots and get ready for evacuation," he told the public.
He also assured that the authorities have begun addressing drainage-related problems, building embankments, and distributing logistical aid to the flood-hit residents.
