Jakarta (ANTARA) - Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto is striving to cultivate a scientific culture within society as a foundation for advancing the nation and enhancing its global competitiveness.

"We want to build a scientific culture, a culture that encourages people to rely on knowledge in their daily lives," Yuliarto stated during a discussion event in Jakarta on Friday.

He noted that many Indonesians are easily swayed by conflicting information, often leading to heightened public emotions.

As a result, people find it challenging to analyze issues with an empirical and rational mindset.

According to the minister, fostering a scientific culture would encourage reading as a daily habit and make education a more enjoyable experience.

"A person’s achievement should be measured by their ability to expand their knowledge capacity," he remarked.

In this regard, the minister expressed hope that in future, more Indonesian children will aspire to become scientists, a career path currently underrepresented among most Indonesian youth.

The minister emphasized that Indonesia needs a significant number of scientists to compete with developed nations. He cited Japan as an example, highlighting the thousands of researchers dedicated to advancing their respective fields through rigorous scientific studies.
