Speaking to reporters before meeting with the president, AHY noted that his ministry seeks guidance from the head of state on waste management-related issues.
"It is critical that we immediately find a solution to our waste emergency situation, and for this, we need directives from Mr. President," he told the media at the palace complex on Wednesday.
The minister also spoke about holding coordination meetings to exchange views on the management of waste in the country.
He stated that the Ministry of Public Works plays a pivotal role in this matter, given its responsibility to prepare the infrastructure and technology required to significantly and comprehensively reduce the volume of waste produced across sectors.
Furthermore, AHY emphasized the importance of applying the principles and values of sustainability in waste management, including the possibility of converting waste into electricity or other valuable items.
"In other words, we need to direct our development efforts and infrastructure toward environmental sustainability. Mr. President considers this issue a priority," he remarked.
The day before, President Prabowo had summoned Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Pandawara, a group of young environmental activists known for their dedication to cleaning up waste and debris in rivers and coastal areas.
Gilang Rahma, a Pandawara member, said his group had the opportunity to directly share the challenges they face with the president, particularly those related to obtaining permits for extracting large volumes of waste from rivers.
He added that President Prabowo also advised the environmental activist group to remain committed and enthusiastic in carrying out their noble mission.
