Kartikoyono explained that QRIS Tap is four to five seconds faster than chip-based electronic money, providing a much quicker transaction experience.
"We have tested transaction using QRIS Tap, and it only takes 0.3 seconds. This is very fast," he stated on Friday.
He further elaborated that QRIS Tap integrates QRIS standards with NFC technology, enabling data transmission via radio waves through NFC readers. This method significantly speeds up transactions compared to the conventional QRIS CPM (customer-presented mode), which requires scanning QR codes using a cellphone camera.
Users simply need to bring their NFC-enabled cellphones, linked to mobile banking or other payment apps, close to the payment terminal.
As of now, QRIS Tap is only compatible with phones with Android operating systems, according to Kartikoyono.
"Apple has a policy that limits open access to payment systems without the company's approval. However, if QRIS Tap brings many benefits, they could accept the development to allow such payment," he highlighted.
BI officially launched QRIS Tap on Friday, initially available for public transportation services, such as MRT Bundaran HI-Lebak Bulus, 12 RoyalTrans or TransJakarta modes, 120 JR Connexion or Damri fleets, and one Trans Sarbagita Bali fleet.
BI aims to fully implement QRIS Tap across all Damri fleets by June 2025, covering TransPasundan and TransSurabaya as well.
By June 2025, QRIS Tap will be expanded to TransJakarta's BRT, non-BRT, and microtrans fleets, along with the Jakarta LRT route, according to Kartikoyono.
He stated that by September 2025, BI aims to implement QRIS Tap on all MRT routes, Jabodebek LRT, and Jabodetabek and Jogja-Solo KRL routes.
In addition to public transportation, QRIS Tap is available at 1,528 retail outlets, 550 hospitals, 138 MSMEs, and three parking lots.
Currently, 15 payment service providers (PJP), both banks and non-bank financial institutions, are prepared to offer QRIS Tap services.
The 15 PJPs are BRI, BCA, BNI, Bank Mandiri, Bank Mega, CIMB Niaga, Bank DKI, PermataBank, Bank Nobu, Bank Sinarmas, BPD Bali, Gopay, Shopeepay, Dana, and Netzme.
