Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) teamed up with the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) to build a migrant worker community security system.

Head of BNN Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom stated that the system's development is part of a commitment to strengthening synergy to protect Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) from the risks posed by international drug syndicates.

"The high interest of the public to work abroad is often exploited by narcotics networks," Hukom noted when confirmed on Monday.

The meeting between the two institutions took place in Jakarta on Thursday (March 20).

According to BNN data, 106 Indonesian citizens have been apprehended for carrying drugs.

To address this issue, the BNN proposed creating a joint operation system and joint intelligence to monitor the movement of people entering and leaving the country.

Hukom also suggested intensifying cooperation in publication and counseling efforts by involving the Ministry of P2MI's structure down to the regional level.

"This way, the government can provide education to the public to avoid activities that intersect with narcotics crimes," he remarked.

Meanwhile, P2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding said his side had signed a memorandum of understanding with BNN for the 2020-2025 period.

The collaboration encompasses disseminating information, increasing human resources (HR) capacity, carrying out early detection of drug abuse, conducting data exchange, and implementing various joint socialization programs.

Several priority programs currently being carried out by both parties include training in the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (P4GN) for Pre-Departure Orientation (OPP) instructors, updating OPP materials about the dangers of narcotics in destination countries, providing call centers for PMI, and drafting special materials for PMI.

The BNN and the Ministry of P2MI agree that migrant workers' protection is not merely ensuring their legal work status but also ensuring they are free from drug crime networks targeting them as easy targets.
