"We will study this environmental topic further and elevate it in discussions with other MPR leaders," he stated in a press release received from the MPR here on Friday.
Soeparno made this remark during a meeting with a delegation from the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI), led by Mas Achmad Santosa, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia and former deputy head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
The deputy speaker emphasized his recognition of the urgency of laws and regulations that ensure the people’s right to a healthy environment.
The lawmaker then asserted that executive, judicial, and legislative state institutions must play a pivotal role in protecting and preserving the environment.
In this context, he underscored that the MPR shares the responsibility to oversee the state’s adherence to Article 28 H, Paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees every Indonesian citizen the right to a healthy and livable environment.
Soeparno also addressed the energy transition, highlighting President Prabowo Subianto’s call for Indonesia to pursue energy self-sufficiency by tapping into the nation’s vast renewable energy potential.
"Indonesia is rich in both renewable and fossil energy sources. However, we still rely on imports to meet our national energy needs," he remarked.
Meanwhile, IOJI's Santosa emphasized the urgent need for Indonesia to adopt environmental constitutionalism in its policies.
"We consider Mr. Eddy Soeparno an MPR leader who is genuinely concerned for the environment. Therefore, we urge the promotion of ecological constitutionalism and the prioritization of environmental issues in policymaking," he stated.
