Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in Solo on Friday that the effort also aims to anticipate criminal cases involving PPDS students.
The move follows the filing of an alleged sexual violence case against a resident doctor/PPDS student from the Faculty of Medicine at Padjajaran University (Unpad) by a patient's family at Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) Bandung.
"This (recurrence of such cases) can be prevented. The Health Ministry will require all PPDS participants to undergo a mental health test before enrollment and during their study once a year," he informed.
He explained that this step is necessary since the mental pressure experienced by PPDS participants is quite high.
"A mental health test must be conducted every year to check their mental condition so we can carry out corrective measures if we find any mental issues," Sadikin added.
In view of the case involving the PPDS participant from the Anesthesiology Department of Unpad's Faculty of Medicine, improvements need to be made, the minister said.
"First, we will halt the activity at the Anesthesiology Department at Unpad and RSHS for one month to look for any shortcomings," he revealed.
In addition, his ministry has also imposed sanctions, such as revoking the PPDS participant's registration certificate (STR) and practice license (SIP), to provide a deterrent effect.
"We ensure that the STR and SIP are revoked. We have the authority. The perpetrator can no longer practice medicine," he emphasized.
The West Java Regional Police earlier arrested the PPDS participant, identified as PAP, 31.
In the initial investigation, the police found indications of abnormal sexual behaviour in the perpetrator.
Unpad Chancellor, Professor Arief S. Kartasasmita, expelled the student and said that the decision reflects the institution's firm stance in responding to sexual violence allegations and violations of the law and norms.
