Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is targeting to boost the capacity of geothermal power plants by 5.2 gigawatts (GW) in 10 years.

"In the new RUPTL (Electricity Supply Business Plan), there is an addition from geothermal in around 10 years, 5.2 GW," the ministry's director general of renewable energy and energy conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, said at a press conference here on Monday.

She informed that Indonesia's geothermal potential is 23.74 GW, spread over 368 locations. As of late 2024, the installed capacity of geothermal power plants in the country has reached 2.68 GW, she noted.

Dewi further said that compared to the US, there is a 1 GW difference: the installed capacity of US geothermal power plants is 3.6 GW.

She is targeting to increase Indonesia's geothermal capacity by 1.1 GW in the next five years so that it can overtake the US as the country with the largest installed capacity of geothermal power plants.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, is aiming to complete the process of creating the 2025–2034 RUPTL this month.

In preparing the plan, the government is trying to find a middle ground between the need for reducing carbon emissions and tapping national energy potential, he said.

He added that the government is seeking to optimize Indonesia's natural resource potential, including renewable energy potential.

He also highlighted the geothermal energy potential of 40 MW in Ambon, Maluku, which needs to be developed soon.

"We have included it (the potential) in the draft 2025–2034 RUPTL," the minister said.
