Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs announced that construction of the Prosperous Fishermen Village in Indramayu District, West Java, is 95 percent complete and will soon be ready for occupancy by the fishermen.

In the ministry's press release here on Wednesday, the ministry's Director General of Social Empowerment, Mira Riyati Kurniasih, stated that the new village development will offer new hope to fishermen affected by tidal flooding.

She noted that 93 housing units are being built in Eretan Kulon Village, Kandanghaur Sub-district, Indramayu.

These residences are designated for government social assistance beneficiary groups (KPM) affected by tidal flooding that damaged their coastal residences.

The ministry aims to complete the Prosperous Fishermen Village program by June 1, 2025, with a total budget of Rp9.3 billion, or around US$551.8 thousand.

Kurniasih stated that this program is part of the efforts to accelerate poverty reduction.

She affirmed that the program not only focuses on building houses and infrastructure but also includes empowerment programs for fishermen.

"In addition to houses and infrastructure, we also provide skills training and economic support. We are collaborating with IPB (Bogor Agricultural University) and Baznas (the National Alms Agency) for the training and product curation (workshop)," she remarked.

She elaborated that collaboration between the Ministry, the local government, and Baznas is key to the program's success.

The Ministry of Social Affairs is collaborating with the Indramayu District Government in West Java to build the fishermen village to improve their welfare, hoping that the village can become a pilot project or model for other regions.
