Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is one of the first countries that the United States has agreed to discuss President Donald Trump's import tariff policy with, according to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto.

"Indonesia is among the first nations to be accepted for talks," he said while providing updates on ongoing diplomatic efforts against the 32-percent tariff imposed on Indonesian products by the US.

During a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Friday, which was followed virtually from Jakarta, Hartarto noted that the Trump administration has also initiated similar discussions with Vietnam, Japan, and Italy.

The minister highlighted that Indonesia has been actively engaging with the relevant US officials, most notably Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, regarding the tariff policy.

He also pointed out that both the Indonesian and US governments have committed to working toward a constructive and mutually beneficial conclusion to negotiations within the next 60 days.

He emphasized that the US has shown its willingness to engage in more technical discussions, which he views as a positive reception to Indonesia's initiatives.

He then outlined several key proposals presented by the Indonesian negotiation team during meetings with the US government, including Indonesia's commitment to increasing the import volume of liquefied petroleum gas, crude oil, and gasoline.

"Indonesia also intends to purchase agricultural products, including wheat, soybeans, and soybean meal, as well as procure more capital goods from the US," he said.

The minister further said that Indonesia has pledged to support the operations of US businesses in the country, offer incentives, and ease the process of obtaining permits.

Additionally, the government has highlighted opportunities for cooperation in critical minerals, horticultural commodities, and human development.

"We have also persuaded the US with more favorable financial services," he stated.
