Jakarta (ANTARA) – The ERIA School of Government (SOG) today held a seminar titled "Indonesia's Role in the Cambodia Peace Process" at the ERIA Office in Jakarta. The event kicks off a series of activities leading up to the ERIA Leadership Lecture featuring Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on May 6, 2025.

The seminar underscored Indonesia's pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in Cambodia during the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly through its "cocktail party diplomacy" and leadership in the Jakarta Informal Meetings (JIM). These initiatives not only facilitated Cambodia’s path to reconciliation but also strengthened ASEAN’s position as a driver of regional stability.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean of the ERIA School of Government, emphasized Indonesia’s significant contributions, particularly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).

"Indonesia’s initiative in the Cambodia peace process is a monumental example of how constructive diplomacy and visionary leadership can bring stability and peace to a region amidst conflict," he said.

The diplomatic efforts began under the late Minister Mochtar Kusumaatmadja, who initiated informal engagements, followed by Minister Ali Alatas, who spearheaded the Jakarta Informal Meetings (JIM) that became turning points in the peace process. General L.B. Moerdani, then Minister of Defense, also played a critical role by engaging Vietnamese representatives and strengthening ASEAN’s stance through strategic military diplomacy.

These collective efforts shaped the foundation for Southeast Asia's stability today. As Prof. Aizawa emphasized, "Unlike many other regions still grappling with territorial disputes and geopolitical tensions, Southeast Asia has successfully built lasting stability through a collective regional approach, in which Indonesia played an active role."

This seminar is part of ERIA’s effort to strengthen Southeast Asia’s institutional memory through the Leadership Lecture Series. The second edition of the series will feature H.E. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who will reflect on his leadership in achieving peace and national reconciliation in Cambodia. His insights are expected to offer valuable lessons for policymakers, scholars, and young leaders across the region.

The ERIA Leadership Lecture Series was first launched on September 18, 2024, with H.E. Prof. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, 6th President of Indonesia, as the inaugural speaker. The series provides a platform for high-level discussions on leadership, governance, and regional cooperation, contributing to the region’s diplomatic and intellectual heritage.

Through today’s seminar and the upcoming Leadership Lecture, the ERIA School of Government reaffirms its commitment to advancing Southeast Asia’s journey toward peace, stability, and deeper regional cooperation.
