At a meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday (April 30), both ministries agreed to intensify such efforts during the upcoming university orientation period, according to a statement received here on Thursday.
"We are confident that this period provides the best opportunity to spotlight lessons on sexual abuse and bullying. It is crucial to raise awareness about these issues among new students, who are often highly enthusiastic during this time," Diktisaintek Minister Brian Yuliarto noted.
Yuliarto also highlighted his ministry’s plan to issue a circular urging higher education institutions to include clauses addressing inappropriate behaviors and mindsets in new student contracts.
“It is essential to instill anti-violence values in students from their very first day on campus. This is not a mere campaign but a sustained national movement,” the minister affirmed.
PPPA Minister Arifah Fauzi agreed with Yuliarto, saying that a shared vision among universities and other relevant stakeholders is paramount to creating a safer and more inclusive campus environment for all.
“Orientation organizers must not allow any form of violence. All universities across Indonesia should issue a joint declaration to demonstrate their commitment. If needed, the government can grant awards to universities that effectively implement safety standards for women and children,” she stated.
Shifting focus to communication, Fauzi stressed the need to use adaptive and contemporary strategies to engage Gen Z students effectively.
"We intend to involve influencers with adequate knowledge about youngsters' perspectives to ensure our efforts are well-received and not seen as patronizing. Minister Brian and I will visit campuses during orientations to directly convey our messages," she concluded.
