Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Education Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Trina Fizzanty, has stressed that the reorientation of education is essential to build an educational environment that prioritizes honesty and integrity.

"We have to reorient education, not only to pursue results, but also the process," she said here on Thursday in response to the detection of university admission cheating cases this year.

According to Fizzanty, the cheating cases are concerning and indicate that moral, character, and integrity issues are still serious challenges in the world of education in Indonesia.

Those cases, she said, also reflect that efforts to develop students' character and instill values have not been successful.

"When the orientation of education emphasizes academic achievement and competition too much, values like honesty and integrity are usually left behind. This is certainly not solely the students' fault," she added.

Fizzanty said that to create an educational environment that upholds honesty, a healthy learning culture needs to be promoted from an early age.

In this case, she explained, teachers and parents must set an example by upholding integrity and applying clear and fair consequences for dishonesty.

Likewise, in family and society, parents and leaders must model good behavior, she stressed.

She recommended that the university admission process be continuously reviewed to prevent any extreme pressure that provokes students to cheat.

She also suggested that the admission process combine academic assessments as well as students' track records and social activities.

"That way, those who pass to become university students are not only smart but also have noble character," she explained.
