During the commemoration of International Labor Day on Thursday, he signaled that the ratification would also be studied by the National Labor Welfare Council, which will be formed soon.
"We will ratify it into law for workers at sea and ships," he said while giving a speech at the event.
The National Labor Welfare Council will consist of labor figures and leaders from across Indonesia.
"They will be responsible for studying the condition of workers and advising the President on improvements to laws and regulations that are seen as unfavorable to workers," he explained.
He made the promise to ratify ILO Convention 188 in response to a request from workers, which was conveyed to him directly by general chairperson of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI) Pembaruan, Jumhur Hidayat, during the commemoration.
Hidayat outlined the demands of workers in the fisheries and maritime sectors.
"Those workers request the ratification of ILO Convention 188 into law to protect themselves which are amounted to hundreds of thousands," he told Prabowo.
ILO Convention 188, which was ratified in 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland, specifically regulates protection standards for workers in the maritime and fisheries sector, including crew members working on fishing vessels.
Since its ratification, several civil society organizations have taken the initiative to form Team 9 to prepare recommendations for a road map for the protection of fishermen through the ratification of K-188 in Indonesia.
The team consists of the Indonesian Transportation Crew Members Union (SAKTI), Indonesian Seafarers and Fisheries Workers Union (KP3I), Indonesian Ship Manning Agents Association (ISMAA), and Human Rights Working Group (HRWG).
It also includes the Indonesian Fishing Crew Members Union of North Sulawesi (SAKTI Sulut), Indonesian Fishermen's Union (SNI), Sumatra Environmental Initiative, and People's Coalition for Fisheries Justice (KIARA).
In ASEAN, Thailand is the only country that has ratified the legislation implementing ILO Convention 188, even though the fisheries and marine sector is the economic backbone of the majority of countries in the region.
