Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf has said that the government is working to optimize the role of universities in each region to support the tuition-free school program Sekolah Rakyat (People's School).

Speaking in Malang, East Java, on Friday, he informed that collaboration with universities for the program may vary in form.

First, he said, his ministry will ask universities to provide lecturers to assist the learning process at schools, especially if the schools are located near their campuses.

Second, the ministry will open opportunities for university students to participate in the program.

"Later, we will also ask university students to assist there," he said.

Collaboration with universities, he said, is part of mutual cooperation to support people's welfare.

Regarding teachers and school principals for the schools, he informed that the government is currently making preparations to recruit them, including considering the options proposed by regional governments.

According to the minister, the government is seeking to appoint teachers and principals with government employee status to the schools.

He expressed the hope that the special recruitment process for teachers will be completed soon, so that operational preparations for learning activities at the schools can be carried out quickly.

"We are currently in the recruitment process for teachers; hopefully, it can be completed next month. There are around 53 locations (for Sekolah Rakyat) in various provinces that are ready," he said.

He further said that once the first phase of the Sekolat Rakyat program is initiated, his ministry will consider the possibility of increasing the number of schools.

"In the future, by 2026, hopefully, between 100–200 new school locations will have been established with building standards approved by the President," the minister added.
