According to the BNN's main secretary, Inspector General of Police, Tantan Sulistyana, drug abuse in Indonesia has become an increasingly threatening, worrying, and complex issue that needs to be addressed without delay.
"Therefore, we plan to strengthen resources and infrastructure to more optimally handle drugs," he informed during a meeting with National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
He informed that under the BNN Strategy for 2025–2029, the government is aiming to create superior human resources who are free from the influence of drugs.
The BNN's policies and strategies for handling the drug issue include improving collaboration, strengthening intelligence for the prevention and eradication of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, bolstering security in coastal areas and state borders, intensifying cooperation with border countries, as well as developing resources and infrastructure.
Sulistyana underlined some challenges faced in carrying out these duties, including limited personnel, facilities and infrastructure, and limited budget.
Meanwhile, advisor to the National Development Planning Minister, Noor Marzuki, highlighted the Rp524 trillion estimate for illegal drug transactions, noting it is markedly high compared to the Rp71 trillion budget required for the Free Nutritious Meals program this year.
The illegal drug trade could hurt Indonesian children. In contrast, the free meals program targets to improve children's health and nutrition to prevent stunting and support the optimal growth and development of the younger generation.
Therefore, Minister Pambudy noted that drugs are a serious problem that must be handled promptly, systematically, and comprehensively.
He also expressed his willingness to support the BNN in seeking to fulfill strategic needs, both in terms of budget, institutional strengthening, as well as improving infrastructure and resources.
