This potential collaboration was discussed during a meeting between Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno and Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) Director Ellen Y.D. Kim on the sidelines of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France last Saturday.
As a result of the meeting, the Jakarta government was invited to visit the Busan Film Center in South Korea.
In an official statement, Rano emphasized that Jakarta—Southeast Asia’s largest metropolitan city—is actively promoting the growth of Indonesia’s national film industry.
He expressed optimism that cooperation with leading film hubs like Busan would strengthen the national film ecosystem and open opportunities for broader global partnerships.
Rano also held talks with Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, Gary Mak, Assistant Commissioner of the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency, and other Hong Kong officials and partners.
During the discussions, he expressed interest in learning about Hong Kong’s policies to develop its creative industry ecosystem. He was particularly impressed by programs aimed at involving youth in the film industry and strategies to keep cinema ticket prices affordable to ensure broader public access.
Rano also praised Hong Kong’s efforts to build a strong global identity as a creative hub and to support filmmakers' participation in international festivals to expand their exposure and networks.
“The Jakarta Provincial Government is initiating the establishment of the Jakarta Film Commission as a concrete step in supporting the national film industry,” Rano said. “The commission will offer incentives, simplified licensing processes, and other supporting facilities.”
Wilfred Wong welcomed Jakarta’s invitation to collaborate in building a thriving film industry ecosystem in the Indonesian capital.
Hong Kong is widely recognized for its dynamic creative sector, with flagship initiatives such as the First Feature Film Initiative (FFFI), which offers funding and mentoring for new filmmakers, and the Film Production Financing Scheme 2.0, which aims to enhance the capacity of local talent.
