Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka lauded various research innovations and downstreaming efforts for herbal and horticultural products at the Herbal and Horticultural Science and Technology Park (TSTH2), Humbang Hasundutan, North Sumatra.

On Friday (May 16), VP Gibran visited TSTH2 in Pollung Sub-district, according to an official statement received here on Saturday.

During his visit, he observed the development of local commodities, such as turmeric, butterfly pea flower, and potatoes, which are currently being tested for their potential in bioethanol production and other derivative products.

He noted that these innovations reflect Indonesia's rich biodiversity and the importance of research in increasing the value of local commodities.

He also commended the downstreaming development of frankincense, a leading local commodity.

“I believe this is truly remarkable. We usually talk about the downstreaming of nickel and minerals, but here, we see the downstreaming of frankincense. This supports President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of achieving national food self-sufficiency,” Gibran remarked.

He further emphasized that strengthening the agricultural sector is a key priority of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.

To that end, he expects the TSTH2 to become a national hub for the production of high-quality domestic seedlings to accelerate the realization of national food self-sufficiency.

He also encouraged the active involvement of young people in agriculture by applying technology and innovation, as demonstrated by the activities at TSTH2.

“I hope our young generation will become more interested in agriculture in the future,” he affirmed.

Director of TSTH2 Sri Fatmawati stated that the facility spans 500 hectares and is designated as a special-purpose forest area.

The TSTH2 has modern infrastructure, including greenhouses, net houses, test plots for herbal extraction plants, post-harvest laboratories, storage areas for medicinal plants, and biofertilizer production facilities.
