Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia aims to clinch three gold medals at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, according to Chairman of the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC Indonesia) Senny Marbun.

He announced this target during a national coordination meeting of NPC Indonesia in Solo, Central Java, on Monday (May 19) night, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Marbun emphasized that NPC Indonesia had already begun preparations to achieve this target, including implementing the Breaking Boundaries program, which focuses on identifying and nurturing young para athletes from different regions across Indonesia.

He noted that this initiative had reached six provinces, with many more expected to make the list this year.

Elaborating further on the program, Marbun stated that his team is recruiting talent scouts tasked with identifying promising para athletes across regions and matching them with appropriate sports disciplines.

He added that selected athletes may undergo guided training in their hometowns or join the Indonesian Paralympic Training Center in Karanganyar District, Central Java.

Furthermore, Marbun highlighted that badminton remains Indonesia’s strongest gold medal prospect.

"Our biggest chance is in badminton, but we also expect (gold medals) from athletics and weightlifting. With this in mind, I am determined to scout new talents in all provinces to set up a strong pool of athletes," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Assistant Deputy from the Young Athlete Development Center (SPOM) of the Youth and Sports Ministry, Aziz Ariyanto, affirmed the government's support for achieving the Paralympic target.

"I am confident that with the government and NPC Indonesia working in collaboration, the target is within reach," he remarked.

He credited his optimism to NPC Indonesia’s consistent record of exceeding expectations, citing the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, where Indonesia secured one gold, eight silvers, and five bronzes, surpassing the initial target of one gold, two silvers, and three bronzes.
