In Circular Letter Number 04 of 2025 concerning the Implementation of Eid al-Adha 2025 Without Plastic Waste, received on Saturday, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq highlighted that distributing sacrificial meat often increases plastic waste due to the usage of single-use plastic bags.
"The Eid al-Adha celebration, which falls in June and coincides with World Environment Day themed 'Ending Plastic Pollution,' only feels appropriate for us to maintain the condition with minimum waste," he affirmed.
In the circular signed on May 22, the minister called on regional governments to ensure that Eid al-Adha 2025 is celebrated with minimal plastic waste by conducting extensive public outreach and issuing appeals through various media to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags.
His side also urged regional governments to provide waste management facilities and infrastructure at Eid al-Adha prayer sites and sacrificial meat distribution points, as well as to organize waste collection and transportation.
If feasible, Nurofiq suggested forming a task force to handle plastic waste and serve as campaign personnel and educators to help reduce plastic waste during Eid al-Adha activities.
"We urge the committee responsible for distributing sacrificial meat not to use plastic bags and/or appeal to the public to bring their own reusable plastic containers for sacrificial meat distribution," he stated.
He also recommended using alternatives to plastic bags, such as banana leaves, teak leaves, woven containers, or other reusable or compostable containers that do not create new plastic waste.
Beyond addressing plastic waste during Eid al-Adha, the ministry issued a circular urging regional governments to draft regulations requiring communities and local stakeholders to sort plastic waste at the source.
Industries are also requested to develop a roadmap to reduce plastic waste from their products and packaging and to provide facilities for the storage, transportation, utilization, and retrieval of plastic waste generated by their products.
