During the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, Brazil, on Tuesday, he emphasized that stronger ties in these areas could also stimulate economic growth.
Sera, who is head of the DPR's Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), led the Indonesian delegation at the forum.
During the meeting, he stressed that BRICS has a vital role to play in revitalizing multilateralism as a counterbalance to increasing global fragmentation.
"As an alternative forum for developing countries, BRICS has the potential to become a driver of the reinforcement of multilateralism amid global uncertainties triggered by unilateral economic policies," he said, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
To support his argument, the parliamentarian highlighted that BRICS -- which recently accepted Indonesia as a member -- has begun asserting its influence in the international trade environment.
This is evident from its members' push for reform within the World Trade Organization (WTO).
"In addition, BRICS member nations have been promoting the use of local currencies in trade among them as a strategic measure to bolster economic resilience," he pointed out.
During a separate session, the deputy head of BKSAP, Hussein Fadluloh, highlighted the significance of intensified cooperation in investment and technology transfer in realizing sustainable development agendas.
Reflecting on Indonesia's situation, he said that the country requires investments and proper technology to support the implementation of its natural resources downstreaming policy.
He expressed confidence that Indonesia's BRICS membership would create avenues for the country to forge cooperation in relevant projects with fellow developing nations.
The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum took place from June 3–5, 2025. It aimed to serve as a platform for the legislatures of member states to exchange views on the importance of cooperation in the face of global challenges.
