Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has emphasized that BRICS must take a more active and constructive approach in pushing for peace and defending multilateral norms.

"BRICS must be at the forefront in defending international laws that should be enforced fairly and consistent with no double standard. No one should be above the law," the minister said during the first session of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) on Monday.

The meeting took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to a statement released by the ministry on Tuesday, at the meeting, Sugiono deplored the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli aggression, proving the failure of the global community in enforcing international humanitarian laws equally.

He said that unchecked unilateral actions and international law violations may deepen distrust and inequality among countries.

Hence, the minister urged all parties to respect the rulings and warrants of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

He also called for empowering the United Nations Security Council to implement its mandates more effectively.

"We must protect international legal institutions from selective enforcement and political meddling," Sugiono stressed.

During the second session of the BRICS FMM, the Indonesian Foreign Minister pushed for multilateral reform to realize a more inclusive, transparent, and trustworthy multilateral system to respond to global challenges.

He also asked BRICS to be a pioneer in realizing a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.

On the sidelines of the BRICS FMM, Sugiono conducted a bilateral meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira.

He also met with the Ethiopian foreign minister and the UAE state minister for international cooperation to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation within BRICS.

Indonesia participated in the BRICS FMM in Rio de Janeiro on April 28 and 29, 2025, its first event since becoming a full member of the BRICS in January.
