Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto, in his speech at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF) 2025 in Türkiye on Friday, proposed that the UN Security Council (UNSC) increase its number of permanent members.

"Now, there are demands that the security council's permanent members should be increased to represent the reality of this present world," he stated at the forum, monitored online here.

The president emphasized that countries, such as India and Brazil, with significant populations and roles, remain underrepresented in the highest organs of the UN.

Prabowo advocated improving and building upon the existing system rather than creating a new one.

"Build on what has been proven to be good. Overcome its shortcomings, improve, build on what has been achieved," he remarked.

In his speech, he also lauded international organizations, such as the WHO, UNICEF, and FAO, which have successfully tackled global challenges like hunger and diseases.

The UNSC is a UN organ that aims to ensure international peace and security. Currently, it has five permanent members: the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, and China.

It also has 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.

In 1965, the UN General Assembly increased the number of non-permanent members of the UNSC from six to 10, but the number of permanent members has not been increased since its inception.

The ADF is an annual event held by Türkiye. This year's forum, held on April 11-13 under the theme "Reclaiming Diplomacy in a Fragmented World," was inaugurated by President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Türkiye is the second stop on Prabowo's five-nation Middle East tour–started on April 9–after the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In addition to the UAE and Türkiye, he is scheduled to visit Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.
