Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, has emphasized the urgency of advancing multilateral reforms to make global governance more inclusive, transparent, trustworthy, and responsive to today’s challenges.

Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, he stressed the need to reform global institutions, particularly the United Nations (UN), and to amplify the voices of developing countries within international financial bodies.

He called for the expansion of UN Security Council membership as part of broader UN reform.

Sugiono also highlighted the importance of strengthening the World Health Organization (WHO) to build a more resilient global health system, especially in preparing for future pandemics and global health emergencies. He noted that Indonesia supports WHO reforms that prioritize the interests of its member states.

“BRICS will play a greater role as a pioneer in building a fairer, more peaceful, and more sustainable world,” he said. “We must move from vision to action by taking swift and effective steps toward reform.”

Sugiono also announced Indonesia’s intention to join the New Development Bank (NDB), reinforcing its support for expanding development financing access for the Global South.

During the first session of the BRICS FMM, he underlined BRICS' growing influence in promoting peace and defending multilateral norms amid declining global trust.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Sugiono held bilateral talks with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, as well as separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.

This BRICS meeting marked Indonesia’s first participation as an official member, following its accession in January.
