Denpasar (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office in Bali Province processed waste banknotes that were no longer fit for circulation into medals that were given to participants in the 2025 QRIS Summer Run Bali running race.

"This is our first medal using waste banknotes," said Deputy Head of BI Representative Office for Bali Province Butet Linda Helena Panjaitan in Denpasar, Bali, Sunday.

The central bank representative office processed around 40 kilograms of banknotes of various denominations that had been shredded into small pieces.

The office collaborated with a number of banks and MSMEs in Bali to print the waste banknotes into medals.

A total of 1,500 green or environmentally friendly medals were printed, adjusting to the number of participants in the first running race held by the central bank in Bali.

According to Panjaitan, the effort was made to support the environmentally friendly movement.

The utilization of waste rupiah banknotes that were not in circulation into medals was also recorded in the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) as the first running medal made from waste banknotes in the country.

MURI Operational Director Yusuf Ngadri directly handed over the record certificate to BI Bali, represented by Butet Linda Helena Panjaitan.

"Hereby stating that the BI Bali representative office officially records the MURI world record for making the first medal from recycled paper money waste as a form of sustainable innovation," Ngadri said.

The running competition, which is planned to be held annually, has a single distance category of five kilometers.

The route taken is from the Baira Sandhi Renon Denpasar East Parking Lot, then Jalan Raya Puputan, Jalan Tantular-Jalan Cok Agung Tresna, and back to the finish line in the east parking lot.
