Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and China have opened discussions to expand cooperation in the higher education sector, with a focus on linking vocational education to industry, advancing digital technology education, and building lecturer capacity.

During a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong in Jakarta on Monday, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Stella Christie, emphasized the need for Indonesia to learn from China’s successful integration of vocational education with industry.

“All elements of China’s vocational education system are closely tied to industry. Indonesia can adopt a similar approach through a university-to-university-to-business system,” Christie said in a statement issued Tuesday.

She explained that this system could be used to strengthen Indonesia’s digital technology education—an increasingly important field in today’s digital era.

On lecturer development, Christie noted that only around 24 percent of Indonesian lecturers currently hold doctoral degrees. In response, she requested that the Chinese government increase its scholarship quota for Indonesian lecturers at Tsinghua University to 50.

“This year, around 20 individuals received scholarships to study at Tsinghua University. The ministry hopes to streamline the process and raise the quota next year,” she said.

Christie also expressed hope that cooperation with China would help Indonesia shift from a top-down education model to a more adaptive system.

In response, Ambassador Wang expressed support for the scholarship initiative and proposed launching a lecturer exchange program to strengthen scientific collaboration and deepen cultural ties between the two nations.
