Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has urged industrial parks to strengthen their commitment to environmental management, including controlling air pollution and managing waste.

“Industrial parks are not only the drivers of the economy but also the epicenters of environmental risks. If not handled seriously, the community will be affected the most,” he said while reviewing 48 industrial parks in the Greater Jakarta area on Tuesday.

The review was conducted to determine the sources of pollution that have triggered a decline in Jakarta’s air quality.

After the inspection of two areas in North Jakarta and Bekasi district, a field verification is being carried out at the Pulogadung industrial park in East Jakarta from June 16 to 20, 2025.

Nurofiq noted that as the oldest and largest industrial park in Indonesia, the Pulogadung industrial park is home to around 370 tenants or companies. However, only 39 tenants participated in the 2024–2025 Environmental Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER).

Of that number, six received a Red rating, and one tenant’s operations were suspended due to serious violations.

“Weak supervision from the park’s manager is the main factor in the decline in environmental performance. If not fixed, this could pollute the air, water, and soil around the area,” the minister said.

To address the issue, the ministry has called for systemic efforts from industrial park managers and tenants, including the implementation of an automatic wastewater quality monitoring system that is connected to the Electronic Environmental Approval Reporting Information System.

The ministry has also asked industrial parks to install continuous emission monitoring systems, an Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station, regularly publish environmental data, and appoint a certified environmental operational officer for each tenant.

Furthermore, the ministry has called for the management of hazardous and toxic waste in line with regulations, accompanied by periodic environmental audits and routine reporting of environmental performance to the Ministry of Environment and regional governments.
