“It highly supports the regulation of online gambling because there are things that are addictive, especially for children, and then make them trapped,” deputy for coordination of family and population quality improvement at the ministry, Woro Srihastuti Sulistyaningrum, said in Jakarta on Thursday.
In addition to laying down sanctions for online gambling platforms, the government regulation, which is currently being prepared, would also strengthen the protection of victims, considering that they often need rehabilitation, she informed.
“The victims often become addicted and need rehabilitation. This is important ... if the victims are not rehabilitated well, they will come back to it (online gambling),” she explained.
Sulistyaningrum also emphasized the importance of ministerial-level institutions regulating the appropriate handling of victims since regulations related to online gambling often focus more on action against perpetrators, while the victims are set aside.
The Ministry of Law is currently harmonizing the Government Regulation on Online Gambling Eradication, and is targeting to complete the task soon, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas confirmed in his office in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Agtas said that the government is focusing on online gambling eradication. President Prabowo Subianto has also called for preventive measures against online gambling, he added.
The regulation is among the preventive measures taken by the Indonesian government against online gambling.
“This government regulation emphasizes the strengthening of prevention and enforcement against online gambling to be more maximal,” he said.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported that in the period from October 2024 to May 2025, it blocked access to 1.3 million items of content related to online gambling.
