"Military education is not part of this. This is character education, not military-style education," Agus stated after closing the first retreat for Sekolah Rakyat principals at the 1/Faletehan Air Defense Artillery Regiment headquarters in Jakarta on Friday.
He explained that the use of military facilities in the retreat activities was solely to foster discipline and responsibility among prospective school principals. Hence, collaboration with the military was intended to help develop strong character, not to introduce military doctrine.
"Indeed, those who have discipline and military needs, we collaborate with them. However, if this is called militaristic education, I want to clarify that it is not true," he emphasized.
Sekolah Rakyat is a government-initiated boarding school program in Indonesia designed to break the cycle of poverty through education. It specifically targets children from families classified as poor or extremely poor, based on the national socioeconomic data (DTSEN).
The first phase of the Sekolah Rakyat principal retreat was held on June 16-20, 2025, with 53 participants, one of whom was absent due to the Hajj pilgrimage.
Topics covered during the event included an introduction to the Sekolah Rakyat concept, character development, and discipline training. The retreat took place at two locations: the Ministry of Social Affairs Training Center and the 1/Faletehan Air Defense Artillery Regiment complex in the Kodam Jaya area.
On this occasion, the vice minister expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and several other partners who supported the implementation of the activities.
He expressed hope that after attending the retreat at the military barracks, the principals leading Sekolah Rakyat will prioritize empathy and support for children from vulnerable groups.
"These principals are the agents of change. They will directly engage with children who may have experienced trauma or social pressures in the past. Therefore, they must have a big heart, be full of empathy, and be capable of being mentors," Agus stated.
