Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) has agreed to cooperate with the European Union (EU) to increase the engagement of Indonesian academics in the global scientific community through Horizon Europe.

Horizon Europe is a flagship research and innovation program of the EU.

“We are committed to positioning Indonesia as a proactive contributor in the global science, technology, and innovation ecosystem through Horizon Europe,” secretary general of the ministry, Togar Mangihut Simatupang, said in a press release issued here on Friday.

He emphasized the critical role of international collaboration in addressing the scientific, technological, and innovation challenges faced by Indonesia.

He said that such partnerships are needed to boost research and development investments, strengthen collaboration between academia and industry players, foster inclusive innovation beyond urban areas, as well as support the development of young researchers.

“We strongly believe that science diplomacy can bridge continents, and we want to see more Indonesian researchers, universities, and innovators actively participating in European projects," Simatupang added.

The ministry and an EU delegation to Indonesia, in cooperation with EURAXESS ASEAN, organized the “EU-Indonesia: Strengthening Impactful Partnerships in Science and Technology Forum” on Thursday to enhance collaboration among stakeholders.

The event, held at the ministry’s office in Jakarta, was attended by over 200 representatives from Indonesian universities, EU member state embassies, research institutes, and international partnership organizations.

Discussions at the forum covered the Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2025–2027, funding mechanisms, as well as stories of successful EU-Indonesia collaborative projects.

Director-general of science and technology at the ministry, Ahmad Najib Burhani, lauded the forum, expressing the hope that it will unlock strategic cooperations that align with national development goals.

Echoing the sentiment, the EU Ambassador to Indonesia, Denis Chaibi, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment as a key partner for Indonesia in developing its science and innovation ecosystem.

He urged Indonesian researchers to increase their involvement in the Horizon Europe program, which offers opportunities for building international partnerships, accessing advanced research facilities, as well as contributing to solutions to global challenges.

“Through the EU flagship research and innovation program called Horizon Europe, the EU reaffirms its commitment to continuing our strong partnership with Indonesia in the field of research innovation, science, and technology,” Chaibi said.
