Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta, as a metropolitan city, must continue developing as a cultured global city, the Home Ministry's Director General of Population and Civil Registry, Teguh Setyabudi, emphasized.

"A place where modernity and tradition coexist in harmony," he said during the Plenary Session of the Jakarta Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) held to commemorate the 498th anniversary of the city here on Sunday.

He stated that culture is not merely a legacy of the past, but also a foundation for the future that strengthens the spirit of unity and national character.

He said that the Jakarta community's preserved cultural heritage can serve as a benchmark for the city’s progress.

"Because Jakarta’s advancement should not be measured solely by infrastructure and economic growth, but also by its well-maintained and organized cultural values," he said.

Setyabudi also emphasized that Jakarta’s future development must be grounded in thorough and sustainable planning, aligned with the needs of its people and the city’s evolving dynamics.

On the other hand, he added, as a city with significant magnitude, Jakarta is expected to set an example in supporting national strategic programs.

In addition, all of the city’s policies and strategic actions must not compromise cultural values and the welfare of its people.

He called on all layers of Jakarta society to preserve diversity, strengthen unity, and build an inclusive, welcoming, and culturally rich city.

"Let's ensure that Jakarta becomes a place where every resident feels safe, prosperous, and proud of their identity," he added.

He expressed hope that as Jakarta marks its 498th birthday, it may continue to grow, advance culturally, and serve as an inspiration for other cities across Indonesia, and even the world.
