Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has announced the establishment of a command post in Ambon city, Maluku, for mitigating landslides and anticipating potential disasters caused by high-intensity rain.

Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the BNPB, Abdul Muhari, informed in Jakarta on Monday that the command post is providing information to the community and coordinating mitigation measures for hydrometeorological disasters.

“The command post is also readied to monitor and respond to other potential disasters due to extreme weather,” he said.

The step has been taken in response to the landslide in Passo and Halong villages, Baguala sub-district, Ambon city, on Saturday (June 21, 2025).

The BNPB confirmed that the landslide caused one death and directly affected three families.

Based on reports collected by the BNPB until Sunday night, the landslide, along with tree debris, also threatened buildings belonging to 32 other families in the affected residential areas.

According to Muhari, the rapid response team of the Ambon City Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has evacuated affected residents and distributed emergency response logistics, such as tarpaulins, shovels, carts, and sacks to them.

“The cleaning of landslide material and tree debris has been carried out, and residents’ activities in the affected areas have started to return to normalcy,” he said.

Several other areas have also been identified as landslide-prone. They include Batu Meja, Batu Gajah, Waihoka, and Hatalai villages.

The BNPB has urged residents, especially those living on hillsides or near riverbanks, to remain alert during rainfall with moderate to high intensity.

“We hope residents comply with the appeal from officers who are on standby in disaster-prone areas,” Muhari said.
