Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti has encouraged Indonesian language teachers to adopt more innovative and engaging methods for teaching Indonesian language and literature in schools.

At an event titled "Mr. Minister Greets Indonesian Language Teachers," the minister gathered 250 Indonesian language educators, students, and relevant stakeholders from Jakarta and nearby areas to discuss ways to enhance the effectiveness of Indonesian language learning and teaching.

"I would like to emphasize the importance of teaching the Indonesian language in an easy and fun manner. Hence, we find it necessary for Indonesian language teachers to improve their teaching strategies," he remarked at the ministry headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Mu'ti noted that his ministry took the initiative to hold the dialogue in line with the government’s commitment to revamping the approach to teaching Indonesian language and literature, aiming to shift from normative methods to more engaging ones.

The minister noted that a lack of creativity in teaching and learning had led to low motivation among students to explore Indonesian literary works, which he believes can play a vital role in shaping positive character.

On that note, he cited the 2024 National Assessment data that showed Indonesian pupils' literacy rates remained unsatisfactory.

Furthermore, results from the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI) conducted between 2021 and 2024 indicate that most students at junior high, senior high, and vocational schools did not meet the expected standards.

"These facts spotlight the need for concrete action to comprehensively overhaul the Indonesian language learning system. We hope this event will foster a shared understanding of language and literature teaching and serve as a platform to gather aspirations," he stated.

He affirmed that the ministry is committed to positioning the teaching of Indonesian language and literacy not merely as a tool for grammatical proficiency but also as a means to shape character and stimulate critical thinking among students.
