Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - An oil tanker caught fire while docked at PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia in Tanjung Uncang, Batam City, Riau Islands, on Tuesday afternoon, according to local authorities.

"The fire broke out at around 2:15 p.m. local time, affecting seven people at the scene," said Batu Aji Police Chief, Adjunct Commissioner Raden Bimo Dwi Lambang.

He noted that the extent of the victims' conditions—whether they were injured or deceased—had not yet been confirmed. The vessel involved, the Federal II, has since had the fire extinguished.

Due to the shipyard’s restricted access, firefighting and evacuation efforts were handled solely by the shipyard’s internal safety team, Lambang explained.

Police officers on-site secured the shipyard’s perimeter and coordinated with shipyard officials to ensure all affected individuals were transported to a nearby hospital.
