“In responding to several conflicts that currently exist, our Constitution has mandated the government to protect the whole Indonesian nation,” she said in a statement received here on Wednesday.
Moerdijat conveyed this in her written remarks at an online discussion on the Israel-Iran war on Wednesday.
She stressed that the response to conflicts must prioritize global peace.
“The 1945 Constitution also emphasizes that Indonesia must participate in global peace based on freedom, perpetual peace, and social justice,” she said.
The MPR deputy speaker added that the geopolitical situation in the last few months has had a significant impact on various sectors, such as the economy and politics, in Indonesia.
For that reason, she expressed the hope that Indonesian policy makers will take the right steps in responding to ongoing global conflicts, while still prioritizing efforts to realize world peace.
Meanwhile, military observer Jaleswary Pramodhawardani opined that in the near future, escalating conflicts will affect the global economy, for instance, in the form of disruptions in world oil trade, and trigger the spread of hostilities in the region.
On the same occasion, a researcher from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Pieter Pandie, said that it is still too early to predict the end of the war between Israel and Iran.
In the wake of the Israel-Iran conflict, 96 Indonesians have been evacuated from Iran. Of the total, 11 arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday and 48 arrived on Wednesday.
