“On behalf of the Ministry of Forestry, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of JDSP, a climber from Brazil," the ministry's Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, stated here on Thursday.
His side also extended appreciation to all members of the joint search and rescue (SAR) team who worked tirelessly in the field to evacuate JDSP.
As earlier reported, JDSP's body was found at the bottom of a ravine approximately 600 meters deep. During the evacuation, the joint SAR team had to bring the body up to Pelawangan, one of the safe points along the hiking trail, before transporting it back to Sembalun.
The evacuation was conducted through maximum efforts by using various methods, including rappelling and helicopter retrieval. However, the SAR team faced several challenges during the process, including difficult terrain and frequent storms.
“Although the team encountered obstacles due to weather and challenging terrain, the evacuation was carried out to the fullest extent, and thankfully, it was successfully completed,” he remarked.
According to a report from the Head of Mount Rinjani National Park, Yarman, the victim's body was retrieved from the bottom of the ravine on Wednesday (June 25) at 1:51 p.m. local time.
The body was then taken to a local accommodation and handed over to the family before being transferred to Bhayangkara Hospital.
Regarding the incident, Pudyatmoko urged all climbers to prioritize safety and ensure they are properly equipped before undertaking a hike. He added that the Forestry Ministry will continue to improve supporting infrastructure and facilities along the hiking trail.
