HST, Kalsel (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has concluded its investigation into a South Kalimantan police officer who was recently arrested for possessing 0.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

Brigadier General Wisnu Andayana, head of the BNN South Kalimantan Office, made the announcement on Saturday.

He said the case file has been submitted to the public prosecutor's office, and the suspect — identified only by the initials MI — along with the physical evidence, will be handed over in early July.

MI is a community police officer (Bhabinkamtibmas) assigned to the Hulu Sungai Tengah Police Station.

"We encountered no issues during our investigation into MI’s case," Andayana said, adding that the officer was apprehended on April 29.

During the arrest, MI was shot while attempting to flee from BNN officers. He was subsequently taken to Bhayangkara Police Hospital for treatment, Andayana added.

Indonesia continues to be a key target for international drug syndicates due to its large population and growing number of drug users. The country’s illegal drug trade is estimated to be worth around Rp66 trillion (approximately US$4.3 billion) annually.

Drug abuse remains a serious threat, with a joint survey by BNN and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) estimating that 3.4 million Indonesians use drugs. The study indicates that approximately 180 out of every 10,000 Indonesians aged 15 to 64 are affected by drug addiction.
