Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana underscored the importance of SOP enforcement in response to a tragic accident involving Marins during a hiking trip on Mount Rinjani, West Nusa Tenggara. The body of this 27-year old Brazilian tourist was found on June 24, 2025.
According to a press release issued by the ministry here on Sunday, the incident serves as a reminder that every extreme tourism destination carries serious risks.
Wardhana stressed the need for comprehensive enforcement of SOPs for high-risk tourism in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“We want to reaffirm the obligation to strictly adhere to the existing SOPs. Compliance with these procedures is not merely a formality, but a safeguard against fatal incidents,” she stated.

She added that the SOPs for Mount Rinjani hikes are stipulated in Decree Number 19 of 2022 issued by the Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Agency.
The Ministry of Tourism, in coordination with relevant ministries and agencies, is working to ensure that safety and security SOPs are properly enforced at high-risk tourism destinations.
In addition to calling for SOP enforcement, the ministry urged managers of high-risk tourism sites to monitor and audit all operators and guides working in such areas to ensure they meet all requirements.
Minister Wardhana added that tour guides and porters operating in extreme destinations such as Mount Rinjani must undergo training on safety measures, emergency evacuation procedures, and crisis communication.
The government is also intensifying educational campaigns to tourists in order to raise awareness of the importance of using licensed operators, wearing safety equipment, and understanding risk information before engaging in risky tourism activities.
