Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) plans to bring together all political party factions to deliberate on the recent ruling by the Constitutional Court (MK) mandating a two-year gap between national and regional elections.

DPR Speaker Puan Maharani announced the plan after a plenary meeting at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“Of course, we need insights from all seated parties since the Constitution stipulates that elections should be held every five years. For this reason, all parties need to pay close attention to the ruling’s potential implications,” she explained.

Maharani noted that the MK’s verdict would likely affect Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections.

“The DPR and the government will thoroughly study the MK’s ruling,” she said, adding that the parliament has not yet decided on a definitive response.

She further informed that the planned deliberations would serve as a follow-up to a meeting on Monday between the DPR, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, and the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem).

Perludem had earlier filed for a judicial review of the General Elections Law and the Regional Elections Law, which resulted in the MK ruling.

“All political parties will gather after we gained insights from the government and representatives of society yesterday,” she said.

On June 26, 2025, the MK ruled that starting from 2029, executive and legislative elections at the regional level must be held between two and two-and-a-half years after the conclusion of national-level elections, marked by the inauguration of elected candidates.

In this context, national elections refer to polling for the president and vice president, DPR legislators, and senators of the Regional Representative Council (DPD), while regional elections cover the election of governors, mayors, district heads, and lawmakers at the provincial and municipal/district levels.
