Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tens of patients were safely evacuated from Kampung Melayu Hermina Hospital in Jatinegara Sub-district, East Jakarta, on Wednesday morning after a fire broke out at around 5 a.m. local time.

"Based on information from our personnel who went inside, the fire originated in a pharmaceutical room," Sukur Sarwono, an officer from the Fire Brigade and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) of East Jakarta, stated at the hospital.

He noted that the fire triggered the evacuation of patients, including those in wheelchairs and bedridden individuals. Some were taken to the emergency department for further check-ups and treatment.

He noted that the Gulkarmat managed to extinguish the fire within half an hour, although smoke continued to fill the hospital.

"As soon as we received the report, our team rushed to the hospital. We are now cooling down the site, with smoke being the main obstacle. Regarding patients, all have been safely evacuated," he stated, adding that no fatalities were reported.

He remarked that the Gulkarmat would launch an investigation into the cause of the fire once all emergency procedures were complete.

Meanwhile, Head of East Jakarta Gulkarmat’s Operation Section, Abdul Wahid, stated that his office deployed 10 fire trucks and 50 personnel to tackle the blaze.

"We also brought in additional equipment to deal with the smoke," he remarked when contacted by ANTARA.

Wahid recalled that the Gulkarmat received a report from a resident via its call center at 5:02 a.m. local time.

"Our team arrived at the site at around 5:08 a.m. local time and began extinguishing the fire at 5:10 a.m. local time," he remarked, noting that the fire's origin was quickly identified.

He added that officers have also placed barricades to keep people away from the danger zone.
